It's Runtime, Do You Know Where Your Code Is?

I just came across an interesting post by Eric Newcomer of Iona.

He writes about SOA solutions and how many of them don't provide any baked-in container-level support for updating service implementations at runtime. It's something that I've been thinking about a lot lately, and it seems that quite a few other people are re-thinking the role of an application container in a service-based architecture.

I can imagine systems that make use of multiple lightweight containers all tied together by some sort of lightweight "glue" or "binder" outer container like OSGi. It's already easy to run a container like Jetty inside of OSGi, and I'm really curious about how a heavier container like Weblogic might utilize a framework like OSGi. Like Greg Brail wrote, "There are applications out there that need to simultaneously take advantage of J2EE and OSGi, and we all have some work to do so we can figure that out."
